Practice makes perfect

Been doing alot of practicing lately to try to up my skills. A few things that I've been concerned about have been A) muscle sculpting, as I feel I did a dreadful job of it on Magnetos right thigh, B) Painting flesh tones, and C) Painting eyes. So I've gone to town lately trying to make sure I'm not holding back on certain projects because I'm afraid of trying one of those three things. Heres the practice so far:

Werewolf #1 WiP

So a little over a week ago, Asch over at figurerealm posted a really, really cool Werewolf, made mostly from the SOTA Dog Soldiers Werewolf and DCUC Manbat. With his blessing, I started buying the fodder to recreate it. First thing I found for a great deal was Man-Bat, follwed shortly by the Werewolf. So today, according to my tracking info the Man-Bat was supposed to get here, so I was going to start work on him. However, when the mail got here, there was the Werewolf, but no Man-Bat. I was in such a frenzied state to get started on him, that I decided to go a different route. The Werewolf comes with two different heads, so I decided I'll be making two different Werewolves, one black with the open mouth, one grey with the snarling mouth. This first one will be the black one, and the grey one will more accurately copy Asch's wolf. His upper torso and arms are from the TB SMC Venom, hands from Hasbro Gargan Venom, lower torso from Lord Thor, legs and hip balls from X3 Colossus, and head, fur collar, and feet from the SOTA Werewolf. I haven't decided if he'll be keeping the fur collar or if the grey one will be getting it, either way, this guy is going to be needing a ton of sculpting. I like him alot, and he's kind of making me want to do more fantasy/horror sort of stuff. I think I might have to do something to weight his feet down to help balance him a bit.

Been finally working on the Sabretooth I've had on the back burner for months. He's mostly done, just need to sculpt/paint his big ass mane. Probably should have waited to paint him till that was done, but I just get impatient sometimes. Oh well.

His colors turned out quite a bit more vibrant than I thought they would. I'll probably advertise him as a "Jim Lee 90's" version, or maybe a "Marvel vs Capcom 2" version. A little detail I added just for fun is his head is removable, to emulate his death scene.

Another guy I've wanted to do for awhile, Magneto. I love his character, and he has a badass power, though it is drawn as though it were lightning most of the time.

He's made from FO Punisher with ML Magneto parts. I wanted to emulate his MvC red eyes and energy blast, so I made an alternate head for him as well.

Seems like now that my plate of planned customs is thinning down a little bit, I should start taking commissions.

Will do any character, from any universe. However to be completely honest, I am much more familiar with Marvel characters, which could effect the out come of others, just because of my ignorance of them. That being said, I take no job lightly, and will always research the project to turn out the best product I can.

Rates are based on materials used, time spent, and the complexity of the project.

X-Men Bishop

A test in speed customizing, this guy took about an hour and a half, not including curing time for the sculpt. I'm pretty proud of that time, as I think this guy turned out pretty great.I wanted his outfit to be at least a little less "Helllllloooo!", so most of the parts of his design that are usually yellow are now brown, and his once blue gloves are now leathery black. His energy blast was fun to make, however his pinstripes were not. Also, I ended up having to repaint his entire face because of my own stupidity, but it came out well, so I'm pleased.

Oh man, this is a guy I feel like I've had on my plate for months that I finally got around to finishing. Now I'm sad I didn't do it earlier, cause I'm very pleased with how he came out. Very tough looking, but not as freakishly big as the official version. He's made from the ML Frankenstein body, with a casted Crossbones head, which was a pain in the ass to paint, but there was no way in hell I was paying the inflated price for the official guy. His bandana is from ML Iron Fist. His weapons come from various sources, as do his belts. I especially like his shotgun shells. He's going to be on eBay on Friday night. Enjoy.

PS: I'm so glad that I finally bought a tripod. These pictures came out so much better than any of my other ones because of it. Its really cool, its a bendy legged little bastard. For some reason it has terrible reviews, but its working great for me so far.

I'm currently working on a project that necessitated the de-lower-legging of my beloved ML Series 6 Wolverine, which though sucks, the project in question is turning out awesome. However I couldn't just sit there and let Wolverine wallow in leglessness, so I decided to do a little something for him.

When I first saw the X-Force designs I was like "black repaint...ftl", but when I read Angels and Demons, I was hooked. I think the specific moment was when Warpath stabbed a guy through the back of the head and his knife came out of the guys mouth. It was awesome. So I decided to redo Wolverine into his X-Force costume.

First, a few changes needed to made. He has really short claws in the X-Force books, so I sliced off the original claws and replaced them with metal claws that attach to his hands magnetically, so he can be displayed with or without them. Next, he got a head swap with Astonishing Wolverine, as the Series 6 head, while my favorite Wolverine head made, doesn't fit his X-Force look. Lastly I swapped out his lower legs for a pair of Bullseyes. This left his legs looking too tall though, so I chopped off about a 1/4" section of them. After that he got a full repaint and now he's done. Over all, he took me about two hours or so, and I'm very, very satisfied with how he turned out.

Let me just say that if I were to do this custom again, I'd use the HML Black Wolverine as a base to cut down on all the sanding and prep I had to do on this guy. All the joints in his upper arms are so tight, that at first paint chipping was a real problem. Just a word to the wise. Without further adieu, here he is:

Well its been a little while but I'm back now. Been working on alot that I don't really want to show off just yet, but it'll be soon. However, they're all involving a lot of work, so I just wanted to do something that would be a simple little repaint, so I picked up the Sharon Carter figure I had sitting around, threw on Ann O' Briens belt, FO Punishers pistol holster, and a cut up MU Deadpools gun, then painted her up, and now I have a pretty cool Black Widow. Its kind of an updated look, sans the weird arm bands she usually sports, but I like it.

It needs some touching up, but soon as thats done, it'll be on ebay. Also, its not showing up in any of the photos I've taken, but her boots are much shinier than the rest of her in person and really emulates a glossy leather look. Anywho, good to be back, enjoy.

PS: Thats a total of 9 Bullseyes right there in the back. Some of them are pretty obscured in the picture, but they're all going to get used up in two up coming projects.

Double Post Wednesday: WiP Rogue and Madame Hydra/Viper

Tomorrow I'm going back to hometown for two weeks to spend the holidays with my family and I won't be working on anything for a little, so I thought I'd just show off a little more of what I'm doing while I have the chance. first up is Rogue.

Rogue is being made from the tried and true formula of LCBH Ann O' Brien plus whatever else the customizer feels like doing.. I really, really like this base, however there is one problem with her: she kinda big... kinda real big. If I had to guesstimate, I'd say she's probably about 7" tall. I've always imagined Rogue as super model tall, but not 7'. Oh well. Despite her size, this base was just too perfect, with the jacket, swept back hair, large... assets. She did require a nose job though, and you can't see it in this picture, but her sneakers and socks have been ground down as well.

Next up is the Viper I'm working on for a 5 piece Hydra Boxed Set. It'll include Baron Von Strucker, Viper, and three Hydra henchmen. I also have an extra in mind for it, but I'm keeping that under wraps for now. Her hair sculpt is taking forever, and is far from complete at the moment. Also, I need to get a hold of another FO Punisher pistol and holster for her left leg. Her hands required quite a bit of work to be able to hold said pistol, whose grip also had to be ground down quite a bit, but now she holds it quite well in either hand. The head isn't currently connected, which is why it looks so high on the neck in this picture... hmm... She also needs a cape, which will probably come from an Emma Frost.

I purchased the X-Men Classics Juggernaut solely to get a hold of the helmet. I had some ideas as to what I would do with the rest of him, namely a Jin Saotome style Sentinel. However, I realized that most of the stuff I'm working on at the moment (not all of which has been featured on this site yet), is X-men related, so I thought I should branch out a bit. He's now going to be the Crimson Dynamo.

The helmet is a dremeled out WWE Deluxe Aggression Batista head covered in green stuff and styrene. Guns comes from various Transformers. The little round thing on his chest is actually part of the cut off button that used to activate his action feature. His jet pack (seen in the picture below) is from IM movie Titanium Mans stupid wrist gun and something else that I can't remember.

The helmet is a nice snug fit over the extra head that comes with the Nick Fury/Hand Ninja two pack. I've never seen a picture of the Crimson Dynamo unmasked, so I thought that head was as good as any. It looks small, but I think that just helps the armor look bigger. Both weapons can store on either side of the jet pack.

Next up is just a little paint on Crossbones. Its not much, but sometimes I just like to put a little on a custom to help me get the feel of where its going better.

Heres some stuff I've been working on. I received an ML Frankenstein figure on the cheap, so I decided to make him into a villain I've never actually cared that much for, Crossbones. That is, like most people, I didn't care much for him before he gunned down a certain super hero. His stories leading up to that were actually pretty cool, so I've warmed up a bit to him. However, I hate his original "wife beater with some painted bones on" costume, so I decided to go a little different with him. Just waiting on his head to arrive, then the painting will start.

Had to do a little cutting on Franks fingers to get it so he could hold his guns and be able to have a trigger finger. He's got a ton of pouches on him, which on most characters really annoys me, but I feel like he might actually have a use for them. The shotgun cartridges on his belt and the shot gun are from Ronins 'chucks. I also really like how his shotgun straps turned out, as it cuts a cool looking figure from the front, having it strapped across his back.

Next is a guy I've been working on off and on for a little bit. I really got into comics when I was like 6 and the X-Men animated series first came on. My favorite villain from it was definitely Sabretooth, probably because my favorite hero was Wolverine (big surprise there, a 6 year olds favorite character was Wolverine). I like Sabretooths ML representation, but he's not the same huge, ridiculously muscled character I remember from that show, so I wanted to make one like the villain of my youth. The parts on him that are painted so far that look solid are no less than 5 coats of that color... I have a lot of empathy now for people who choose to do Icon sized Wolverines in his yellow costume... that must be hell.

Lastly, I just have an update on War Machine. Sculpted some new ab armor, redid the chin, and added his head targeted. Not much else to say on that right now, other than that the ab armor needs some more work.

Been working on some stuff lately. Found some games workshop green stuff that I had lying around, so I decided to do some work with it while waiting for some Aves Fixit to arrive. Its a real good medium for sculpting, only problem with it is that it doesn't get as hard as Aves does, so you have to be a little more delicate with your guys. Anywho, heres some of my current works in progress:

First, heres an updated shot of that Daredevil I've been doing on and off over the past couple weeks. His head finally arrived, however, it looked small on the body. So, I sculpted some (much) larger horns, and it actually really helps.

He looks really... comic booky now, but I kind of like the effect

Next, I'm working on a War Machine, using a Modern Armor Iron. His arms and legs are going to a different guy, but I just so happen to have some other extra parts to complete him with. So far all I've done is sculpt on new helmet parts.

A little extra work went into making sure the mask could still come off, so I can eventually paint Rhodey in there.

Next I'm working on a Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider. He's going to have alternate heads, but for now I'm just working on getting Johnnys hair done. Completely removed Longshots uber-mullet, and made him a new cut. Kind of wish I had looked at a comic reference first though, as Johnny (in his blue costume) had more of a long-ish 70's haircut. Oh well.

I had originally bought the Nick Fury/Hand Ninja 2-pack on a whim, just cause it was there. I found a use for Nick (my Daredevil), but I couldn't think of anything to do with my red ninja. I decided to go the super easy route and am just going to make him into a Wolverine in a Ninja Costume. He's already got his steel claws (and outlets). Now he just needs a head swap and repaint.

Warpath WIP part 2

I'd say Warpath is just about finished, just needs a little touching up. I wanted a tall figure, but this is just silly. He dwarves other human sized MLs easily, almost reaching the 8" mark.

Knife, steath, zipper line, belt, X belt buckle are all from scratch. I know in the comics that, when in this costume, his belt buckle is red and tan, but I just felt like the red and black is a more classic X-Man look, so I went with that. A nice little bonus, the knife really fits snuggly into the sheath.

Here I thought I would make a list of customs I currently have planned, and a short description of how I plan on achieving it.

Transformers -

Universe Classics Hot Spot: Universe Inferno with a reworked head, scratch built chest plate, and added ladder.

Universe Classics APC Seacon Snap Trap: Universe Onslaught repaint, possibly with reworked head.

My personal dream project, Myth Wars Grimlock: I don't know what the recipe will be yet, though I have some ideas. If you're unfamiliar with Myth Wars, I recommend heading to www.seibertron.com, and search in the fan art section for "myth wars". It's some pretty awesome stuff.

Universe Classics Combaticon Onslaught: Armada Optimus Prime, with new chest plate attachments and a new head.

Marvel Legends -

Sabretooth: Hasbro Spiderman series Mac Gargan Venom with ML Series 5 Sabretooth head, and sculpted mane.

Ninja Wolverine: Hasbro Legends 2-Pack Hand Ninja with unmasked Logan head and magnetized metal claws.

Daredevil: Hasbro Legends 2-Pack 616 Nick Fury, and a magnetized neck joint with interchangeable Spiderman Classics 2 Daredevil and Face Off variant unmasked Matt Murdock head.

Morlock Hemingway: Completely stealing this recipe from Jin Saotome. The Incredible Hulk movie Abomination, with DC Direct Black Mask head and alot of sculpting.

Warpath: Just a repaint of WWE Deluxe Aggression Triple H.

Deadpool: Repainted Moon Knight, with a bunch of added weapons.

Iron Patriot: Probably the biggest mish mash of parts. Movie Iron Man Torso, ML Modern Iron Man Arms and legs, and Hasbro Legends Heroes Reborn Iron Man head.

Carnage: ML box set Carnage, repainted with bendy tendrils and weapons. Magnetized neck for interchangeable Cletus Cassidy head (made from a Banshee head) and Carnage head.

Romulus: ML Sabretooth body, Hasbro Legends X3 Beast head, AoA Sabretooth ponytail, metal claws.

Video Game Characters -

Kratos: Neca Kratos forearms, head, "skirt", lower legs and weapons, WWE body.

Hello all! Whiskeytango here. I've been really casually customizing for a couple years now, but I've been thinking lately that I'd like to take it to the next level. Sooo I've been working lately to try take it there. It's a long road, and I'm not even close to where I want to be, but you know what they say, "practice makes perfect". I plan on transferring to a full fledged website once I have a enough material to warrant it, but for now, this is my blog.
